Sometimes teams just pick themselves, while others are a real head-scratcher. Ahead of the first competitive game of the 2026/27 season, trying to second-guess Gillingham’s first starting XI seems like a fool’s errand, simply because there’s so much we don’t know yet.
One thing we do know is Gareth Ainsworth’s reshaped, revitalised squad certainly seems to offer him more flexibility in terms of formation, and more options across various areas of the pitch. But what we don’t know yet is where these players sit in the overall pecking order in each of their respective roles.
