Gillingham boss Gareth Ainsworth and midfielder James Brophy have been nominated for Sky Bet League Two monthly awards for September.

Gills manager Ainsworth led his side to 10 points from a possible 15 during the month of September, with a come-from-behind 1-1 draw at Chesterfield on September 1 followed by three impressive victories.

First, the Gills put Rochdale to the sword in a stunning away performance as they ran out emphatic 4-1 winners at Spotland. Then Ainsworth's men returned to Priestfield for back-to-back home games against tough opposition, and claimed a pair of standout victories.

First, they defeated previously unbeaten Tranmere Rovers 2-0 on September 12. Then, seven days later, they put three past Bristol Rovers in a 3-0 victory over Steve Evans' promotion-fancied outfit.

The month ended in defeat, with a 3-0 away loss at York City, but by then Ainsworth's Gills had established themselves as an emerging side in League Two.

That body of work through the month of September earned Ainsworth a nomination for League Two Manager of the Month, with the EFL website stating: "Gillingham are offering positive signs that Ainsworth’s approach is beginning to work.

"With new players bedded in and his wing-backs offering width, his side is creating and converting chances with 10 goals and 10 points from five games."

James Brophy: Wondergoals and work-rate

Brophy's performances through the month of September have been particularly impressive given the fact that he's been asked to do a job for the team at left wing-back, as well as in his best position as an attacking midfielder.

On September 5, Brophy scored a spectacular opener at Rochdale with a potential Gills Goal of the Month contender, but eclipsed that effort in the second half as he ran through the entire Rochdale team to score a jaw-dropping solo effort that evoked memories of John Barnes' iconic finish at the Maracana in 1984.

Brophy went on to add another goal, as he thrashed home another superb strike from the edge of the area to open the scoring in Gillingham's 3-0 win over Bristol Rovers on September 19.

In announcing Brophy's nomination for League Two Player of the Month, the EFL website stated: "Brophy showed his versatility in September, equally effective and reliable in an attacking midfield role or as a wing-back.

"His three goals included two stunners at Rochdale, a delightful curler and a mazy run and finish at pace."
