Being based in the South East of England, Gillingham FC's hardy away fans are pretty used to racking up the miles as they travel the length and breadth of the country supporting the Gills. And this season, it'll be no different.

Research conducted by Select Car Leasing has identified exactly how far fans from each club in English football's fourth tier will have to travel to visit every away game in League Two this season.

The research also shows how much that travel will cost, depending on the fans' choice of transport.

The research has revealed that, for fans to travel to all 23 League Two away games from Priestfield Stadium, Gillingham's fans will rack up a total of 8,284 miles in round-trip mileage this season.

To travel to those awaydays by car will cost £1,408.28 in petrol, or £538.46 in electricity, while fans opting to let the train take the strain will have to fork out around £2,485.20.

Those figures put Gillingham's away fans second in League Two's away travel table, with Exeter City's fans having to travel even further, and spend even more, on their 23 League Two awaydays this season.

Fans of the Grecians face a total of 9,578 miles of travel to make it to all 23 away games this season, for a cost of £1,628.26 in petrol, or £622.57 in electricity. The trains will cost Exeter's travelling support £2,873.40 per adult.

At the opposite end of the scale, the team with the easiest travel schedule is Port Vale who, by comparison, have a paltry 4,504 miles to travel this season.

Research methodology

  • Total mileage is calculated based on the shortest road journeys using Google Maps
  • All journeys are round trips starting at a team’s stadium to the stadium of their opponents, and back
  • Fuel costs are calculated using a price benchmark of £1.58 per litre for fuel, assuming an average fuel economy of 42 miles per gallon. As a result, the distance cost is worked out at 17p per mile
  • Electricity costs are calculated using a price benchmark of 6.5p per mile.
  • Approximate advance train ticket costs are calculated using the industry-standard modelling benchmark from the Office of Rail and Road of 30p per mile
