I’ll kick off with an admission. I’m an optimist. Always have been. The glass is always half-full, rather than half-empty. But my optimism doesn’t mean I’m delusional, and it doesn’t mean I’m unrealistic.
That’s why, despite being massively encouraged and pleased with the start we’ve made to the new season, I’m not doing cartwheels (metaphorical ones, at least) and hailing us as bona fide contenders just yet. Because we’ve all been here before.
Over recent seasons, Gillingham have done two things consistently: They’ve started strongly, then fallen away by the time the clocks go back. We’ve seen it happen under a succession of managers, each of whom was seemingly able to get us off to flying starts, but then was equally unable to stop the wheels coming off two months later.
