The Hat-Trick

The hat trick header

After their Matchday 8 defeat at York, Gillingham regained their composure on their return to Priestfield as they drew 0-0 with a stubborn Newport County side on Matchday 9.

Now Gareth Ainsworth's side are back on the road again, as they head north to the New York Stadium, where Alex Bruce's Rotherham United provide the opposition.

As we get set for Saturday's game, here's a hat-trick of burning questions we hope to get answered during the 90 minutes this weekend...

Can Gillingham pick up their second away win of the season?

If there's one thing we've learned already this season, it's that League Two looks incredibly tight. It means those sides that can establish some consistency stand a good chance of rising to the top of the pile.

On Saturday, Gillingham will look to start building another strong run of results having bounced back from their 3-0 defeat at York with a goalless draw at home. An away point would be considered a decent day's work, while an away win would be a sign that this Gillingham side really is different to previous iterations that have consistently struggled on the road.

With more players starting to return to match fitness, Ainsworth will have more options at his disposal, so it'll be interesting to see what tweaks, if any, he makes to his starting lineup on Saturday. One potential change could involve the man we're about to discuss next...

Will Tom Eaves return to haunt his old club?

The match offers an opportunity for Tom Eaves to put one over one of his former clubs as the big Gills striker returns to Rotherham as a Gills player.

After a loan spell at the club earlier in his career, Eaves later signed a permanent deal with the Millers during their Championship days, and wasn't able to find the net in 20 league appearances for the club.

Things improved slightly the following season. Eaves scored six times in 33 league appearances before departing the club in the summer to join Northampton Town.

During his time at the Cobblers, Eaves returned to Rotherham as an opposition player and found the net for his side in a 2-1 defeat. Now he has the chance to see if he can find the net as he returns again, this time having reunited with the club where he played the best football of his career.

If he's close to fully fit, there's a very good chance Eaves will start, and that would give him the chance to repeat the feat by scoring against the Millers again. Only this time, he'll be hoping it's as part of a winning effort.

And if Eaves scoring at the New York Stadium last season wasn't enough of a good omen, maybe Gillingham's last win at the stadium might offer some more cause for optimism. Gillingham ran out 3-1 victors that day, with the second goal coming via a diving header from... you guessed it, Tom Eaves.

Can Gillingham keep Paul Mullin quiet?

One of the higher-profile League Two signings of the summer saw Paul Mullin arrived at the New York Stadium following the end of his stellar run at Wrexham. The 31-year-old striker has hit the ground running with Rotherham, and already has four goals to his name, including three in his last four appearances for the Millers.

It's highly likely he'll lead the line for the hosts on Saturday, and his battle with Omar Beckles could be one of the defining head-to-head contests on the pitch on Saturday.

Can Beckles and co keep Mullin quiet and help Gillingham to a positive result on the road? If they can't, it'll be down to Gillingham's strikeforce to outscore the prolific front man and his attacking colleagues in order to bring the three points back to ME7.
