'No-brainer' signing Tom Eaves set to 'play a big part' as Gareth Ainsworth aims high in 2026/27

MATCHDAY 10: With a punishing set of fixtures ahead of him, Gills boss Gareth Ainsworth is happy to have big striker Tom Eaves at his disposal following his signing from free agency in September.

Gillingham manager Gareth Ainsworth has spoken about the unlikely return to Priestfield of former top scorer Tom Eaves, with the big striker seemingly set to play a significant role in Ainsworth's plans moving forward.

With Gillingham's squad beset by a succession of injuries in the early part of the season, Ainsworth has had to make more signings than he originally anticipated before his summer rebuild, with additional loan signings drafted in to help give the squad some much-needed depth to cover early-season injuries to a number of key players.

And, with summer striker signing Will Goodwin picking up niggling injuries in the early portion of the season, and Ronan Hale playing through the pain barrier, the Gills boss made the move to bring in free-agent striker Eaves, who was without a club after his contract with Northampton Town expired in the summer.
