James Brophy stars as Gillingham FC's September Goal of the Month shortlist revealed

James Brophy features three times in the six-goal shortlist for Gillingham's September Goal of the Month.

The month of September proved to be a profitable one for Gareth Ainsworth's side, as they picked up three wins and one draw, versus just one defeat, in League Two action, with the side scoring 10 league goals in the process.

And as well as the volume of goals scored, the quality of some of the strikes stood out, with spectacular efforts from range, well-crafted team goals, and a piece of John Barnes-esque magic the month's highlights for the Gills.

The club have shortlisted the top six strikes from the month and featured them in a YouTube video, with fans invited to vote for their favourite goal.

James Brophy (first goal) vs Rochdale

Brophy's first goal at Spotland was a majestic strike from outside the box as the Gills No. 16 cut inside on his left foot and swerved a peach of a shot into the top corner on 33 minutes to set the Gills on their way to a resounding 4-1 victory.

It was Brophy's first goal of the season, and a first glimpse of the finishing quality he has brought to the Gills since his summer arrival.

James Brophy (second goal) vs Rochdale

Brophy's stunning first effort would have got a lot more hype had it not been for his second, which overshadowed every other goal in the league that weekend.

With the Gills cruising at 3-0 up, he took possession on the half-way line and proceeded to run through the entire Rochdale defence before calmly slotting past the keeper for an astonishing fourth goal.

It was almost a carbon-copy of the goal John Barnes scored against Brazil in the Maracana back in 1984, and it earned plaudits from across the nation, with the goal shared by Sky Sports and the EFL.

Ronan Hale vs Tranmere Rovers

Logan Dobbs had already headed Gillingham into a deserved lead as the Gills produced a strong performance at home against Tranmere Rovers. But it was Ronan Hale's finish 10 minutes from time that stole the show, and it was all down to a quite sublime pass from Garath McCleary.

After receiving a pass from the charging Hale, McCleary curled a perfectly-weighted pass around the back the retreating Tranmere defence for Hale, who arrived at full pelt to get in behind the last defender to stab home with his first touch.

Hale took a set of studs into his ankle for his trouble, and had to go off injured immediately after the goal, but it was a real goalscorer's finish as he rounded off a quickfire counter-attack with a neat finish. But the pass from McCleary... chef's kiss.

James Brophy vs Bristol Rovers

After Gillingham's 2-0 home win over Tranmere, they were back at Priestfield the following weekend for what many thought would be one of their toughest tests of the season. But it turned out to be the team's biggest home victory of the campaign so far.

After a goalless first half, Gillingham sparked into life in the second, with Brophy's low swerving strike from outside the box getting the scoring underway.

His effort, struck low and with power, was threaded through a gap in the Tranmere defence and left keeper Brad Young unsighted until it was too late.It sparked a great second-half performance as the Gills ran out 3-0 winners.

Sheldon Kendall (first goal) vs Bristol Rovers

Gillingham's 3-0 win over Bristol Rovers saw Sheldon Kendall come off the bench to score twice in the last five minutes as the Milwall loanee grabbed his first two goals in a Gills shirt.

His first was a superb first-time finish from a whipped low cross from Nick Freeman, and showed Kendall's natural finishing instincts as he got across his defender to sweep the ball powerfully into the bottom corner of the net.

He'd go on to add another, but his first was undoubtedly his best finish, and a great end to a well-constructed team move.

Louie Dayal vs Cambridge United (EFL Trophy)

Every pro footballer remembers their first goal, and Louie Dayal's maiden strike as a professional is certainly one he won't forget in a hurry.

A beautifully-struck left-footed effort, Dayal's strike was deliberately lofted up and over the goalkeeper and into the top corner to give Gillingham a consolation goal in a 4-1 EFL Trophy loss to Cambridge United.

Dayal's strike was the lone high point from a Gills perspective, as he showed us a glimpse of the quality he could potentially bring to the first team in the months and years ahead.
