James Brophy wins Sky Bet EFL Goal of the Month for September
17.10.26, 13:02
In news that will come as no shock to anyone connected with Gillingham Football Club, James Brophy has won the Sky Bet EFL Goal of the Month for September.
Brophy netted twice in the Gills' 4-1 away win at Rochdale, with his second goal winning the EFL's award as he picked up the ball on the half-way line and ran through the entire Rochdale defence to score an incredible goal.
The goal was nominated for the EFL's September Goal of the Month award, and was a clear winner, with former player and EFL panelist Don Goodman hinting that Brophy's effort might not be bettered all season.
A statement from the EFL read:
Gillingham winger James Brophy is the Sky Bet League Two Goal of the Month winner for September.
Brophy was just inside his own half when he collected the ball. What followed was a blur of motion, feints and dazzling footwork that proved too much for seven Rochdale players to stop.
Lead Sky Bet EFL Goal of the Month judge and Sky Sports Pundit Don Goodman said: "James Brophy’s brilliant solo run began in his own half. He showed great pace and control to drive through the Rochdale midfield, and once he got into the box the defenders couldn’t touch him.
"He skipped through three challenges before slotting into the bottom corner. You might not see a better goal than that all season."
Brophy beat off competition from Newport County’s Harrison Biggins, York City’s Alex Newby and Salford City’s Joe Powell.
