The Generals: Gareth Ainsworth hopes dressing-room leadership group will drive Gillingham forward in 2026/27

Gareth Ainsworth's new group of locker-room leaders will drive standards in the dressing room and, hopefully, success on the pitch this season. But fans will have to wait until matchday to learn the identity of Gillingham's new skipper.

One of the big topics of discussion ahead of the new season has been who will be given the captaincy in Gareth Ainsworth's new-look Gillingham side.

Over the past few years, on-pitch leadership has been sorely lacking at Priestfield, and the need to bring in more leaders, whether they're wearing the captain's armband or not, has clearly been a part of Ainsworth's thinking over the past 12 months.

Omar Beckles arrived at the club last January with a glowing reference from Leyton Orient fans, as much for his leadership and qualities as a human as it was for his defensive abilities, while Liam Gordon signed this summer from Motherwell, armed with a wealth of top-tier experience north of the border.
