After several seasons of mediocrity, it was clear that something needed to change at Gillingham Football Club. Multiple managerial changes seemingly had little effect on the on-pitch product, with the process of elimination finally falling on the players as the common denominator behind our poor performances.

Chunky contracts handed out to several of our players at the time had previously hamstrung the club's ability to make fresh starts under past managers, who were largely forced to work with the same players that had effectively led to the dismissal of the previous boss.

But that all changed over the summer. Gareth Ainsworth had been in post for a season and a bit, and, while the former Wycombe Wanderers and Queens Park Rangers boss had overseen the club record unbeaten run, the problems were there for all to see last season as the team fell away once again during the winter months for its second successive 17th-place finish.
