Gillingham's reputation for collapsing as soon as the weather turns in October returned in alarming fashion as a second-half capitulation saw them lose 4-1 to Grimsby Town at Priestfield on Matchday 13.

The Gills fell behind via a deflected screamer from Mariners centre-back Harvey Rodgers, and while a smart finish from Ronan Hale ensured the Gills went into the half-time break level, it all fell apart in the second half as Gillingham collapsed, and Grimsby ran riot.

“Little tries to be involved in everything, but unfortunately a lack of quality and an absence of footballing IQ cost him, and his team, dear.”

Too many below-par performers as Gills wilt in the October rain

After going behind early, the Gills battled back, and Ronan Hale equalised before half-time to set the stage for a big second-half performance.

Unfortunately, the only side performing in the wind and rain in the second half was Grimsby, who ran out 4-1 winners on an afternoon to forget for Gareth Ainsworth's men.

We assess the individual performances of each of the Gills players against Grimsby Town on Matchday 13 in our Gills 365 Player Ratings.

“They are committed. Whether their levels... can some of them still reach the levels of this league, is questionable.”

Gareth Ainsworth's next move could be pivotal for his future at Gillingham FC

Gillingham's car-crash performance at home to Grimsby Town exposed some of the same old problems that have haunted this club for the last few seasons.

Now, with the pressure starting to mount, Gareth Ainsworth needs to act, and he knows it.
