The Gillingham Football Club family is saddened to learn of the passing of former centre-back and two-time Player of the Year Richard Green. He was 58 years of age.

Green joined the Gills from Swindon Town in 1992 and immediately became a fan-favourite at Priestfield, winning the club's Player of the Year award in his first two full seasons, 1992/93 and 1993/94.

His aerial prowess, coupled with his distinctive mullet, made him an instantly recognisable figure in the heart of the Gills defence.

Born in Wolverhampton, Green started his career back in 1986 at Shrewsbury Town before moving to Swindon in 1991, then swapping the County Ground for Priestfield Stadium in 1992.

He went on to make 253 appearances for the club, scoring 17 goals, before departing for Walsall in 1998 and enjoying further spells at Rochdale (on loan) and Northampton Town before returning to Dale.

Our thoughts are with Richard's family and friends as they deal with their loss.
