Gillingham's newest signing faces scan after debut injury

Obiero, who signed on a season-long loan from The O's late on Deadline Day, was the last summer signing made by Gillingham before the summer transfer window officially closed at 11pm on September 1.

The 21-year-old, who had been present in Leyton Orient's first-team matchday squads in League One at the start of the campaign, was drafted straight into Gareth Ainsworth's starting XI against Rochdale at Spotland on Saturday. But disaster struck on 18 minutes when he went down awkwardly and immediately felt the back of his thigh.

The club's medics and physio staff came on to attend to the midfielder, who was taken off the field. But when he attempted to get to his feet and walk under his own power, he was forced to sit back down again before he was eventually taken to the dressing room on a stretcher.

On Monday, an update from the official Leyton Orient website reported that Obiero had sustained a hamstring injury and was set to undergo a scan to assess its seriousness.

Obiero's injury added to Gillingham's remarkable run of luck with injuries so far this season. Last season's captain Armani Little went down after 20 minutes of the Gills' opening-day defeat to Walsall, while the new club captain, Liam Gordon, was forced off with a knee injury five minutes later.

Then, another of the club's summer signings, winger Kadeem Harris, was taken off the pitch with a ruptured ACL sustained during Gillingham's away draw at Fleetwood Town. Then it was revealed that midfielder Zane Albarus was being rested as a precaution to avoid a potential injury issue.

Gillingham's 1-1 draw with Chesterfield didn't add any more names to the injury list, but that changed at Rochdale, when Obiero was carried off on 18 minutes. And, while he was being replaced by new signing Eli King, striker Will Goodwin was also withdrawn and replaced by Lamin Sillah for reasons unknown.

Obiero's injury is doubly disappointing for the Orient man, who was set to play against his former loan club, Tranmere Rovers, on Saturday. Obiero's Tranmere debut came against Gillingham last season, and this weekend's game at Priestfield would have represented a nice full-circle moment for the midfielder. But it looks like he'll spend the next few weeks on the sidelines resting and recuperating after his unfortunate injury.
