A hat-trick of defensive calamities saw Gillingham crash to a 3-1 away defeat at Accrington Stanley's Wham Stadium.

A disastrous mix-up between Armani Little and Ollie Wright resulted in the Gills falling behind early, then Andy Smith twice lost his man from corners as Stanley added two more goals via free headers.

A deflected Omar Beckles effort offered brief hope of a comeback, but Gillingham weren't able to muster a shot at goal in the entire second half as any hopes of a fightback fizzled out.

“I'm hoping it's a blip because that reminded me of some bad moments last season. I don't want that – that was terrible.”

'Not good enough': Ainsworth unimpressed after side's sub-par display

Gillingham manager Gareth Ainsworth is known for his upbeat, positive mindset, and his post-match interviews are generally optimistic occasions, even after a defeat. But even he couldn't sugar-coat the display that his side produced on an afternoon to forget at Accrington's Wham Stadium as they crashed to a 3-1 defeat on the road.

Speaking after the match, Ainsworth said it how it was, as he made clear what he saw out on the pitch wasn't anywhere near the standard he, and the players themselves, had set for this season.

“To be honest, it's a really tough one to take, considering the form we're in and how good we've been and reliable we've been.”

'Just a bad day at the office': Freeman says Gills will bounce back after Accrington defeat

Gillingham's 3-1 away defeat at Accrington came as a huge disappointment to the fans, the management, and the players themselves, who were bitterly disappointed in their performance at full-time at the Wham Stadium on Matchday 11.

Gills midfielder Nick Freeman offered his post-match thoughts to Gills TV after the game, and was determined to put the performance down to an individual off-day in the middle of an otherwise encouraging and positive run of results.
