Since the end of last season, a total of 18 players have departed Priestfield this summer, with 15 of them being released, two being sold, and one retiring from the game.
On the flip-side, Ainsworth has brought in 13 players (not including emergency loans), with nine of them arriving as permanent signings, and four coming in on season-long loans.
It's completely transformed the squad, both in terms of personnel, and age profile, with young players forming a significant proportion of Gillingham's summer incomings so far.

To get a sense of the progress that's been made, and the work that's already been done, it's worth looking back at the squad Gillingham finished the 2025/26 season with, and the significant amount of player movement that occurred early in the off-season.
It started with the publication of the club's retained and released list, which showed 15 departures – 14 whose contracts would not be renewed, and one [Sam Vokes] who called time on his career and retired from the game.
Other departures were to follow, but this was the start, as Ainsworth drew the first line in the sand to begin the clear-out before his summer rebuild.

Welcome to Gills 365's live coverage of Deadline Day, as the summer transfer window comes to a close at 11pm on Tuesday, September 1.
It's been a busy summer of transfer activity at Gillingham with 17 players departing Priestfield during the off-season, and more than a dozen new faces coming in. But despite the various changes that have already been made, boss Gareth Ainsworth is still keen on adding at least one or two more new faces to his squad before the window closes.
We'll bring you the latest news, updates and rumours throughout the day as we count down to that 11pm cutoff, and, from 7:45pm, we'll bring you live text commentary of Chesterfield v Gillingham, as Ainsworth's new-look Gills side looks to pick up their first win of the campaign on the road at the SMH Group Stadium.
